This page displays a range of classic and square rigged ships in bottles. These are the ships of the past dating mostly from the period between the 17th and beginning of the 20th century.

HMS Beagle:

The HMS Beagle was a Cherokee-class 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1820. She was later converted to a barque and used as a survey vessel. Her most notable voyage being that of 1831-1836 where on board, she carried Charles Darwin who completed extensive research, particularly on the Galapagos Island that led to the development of his theories on natural selection and evolution.

Bark Europa:

The Bark "Europa" was built in 1911 to serve as a light ship on the Elbe River in Germany. In the 80's she was purchased and brought to the Netherlands where she underwent a full refit. She currently sails the world's prevailing winds of traditional sailing routes, acting as a sail training vessel and receives passengers onboard who participate in the daily sailing of the ship. I was commissioned to build this model for a man who crewed the vessel, visiting Antarctic. The scale is approximately 1:270 and she is placed inside a 5 liter bottle.

There have been attempts to conquer the South pole, explore and cross Antarctica, but none as impressive as the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1914 aboard the Endurance. Their story of survival (without one man lost) documented by photographer Frank Hurley, will go down in history as one of the most epic feats of endurance.

Bonhomme Richard Passing Flamborough Head Chalk Tower:

The USS Bonhomme Richard is displayed passing the chalk tower at Flamborough Head, where, in September of 1779 and captained by John Paul Jones, she engaged in battle and forced the surrender of the HMS Serapis. Upon request by the commander of the Serapis for Jones to surrender, he responded with his famous line, "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight!"

Charles W. Morgan Whaling Scene:

Charles W. Morgan Whaling Ship in Bottle

The Morgan is displayed with her foresails set aback. This slowed the ship's speed and allowed the crew to launch the whaleboats to hunt a pod of sperm whales.

The Schooner Virginia and Pride of Baltimore II are two of the most well known replica ships that hail from the Chesapeake Bay. This scene is inspired by their rivalry in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, the finishing line being Thimble Shoals lighthouse.

The Schooner Virginia was originally a early 19th century pilot vessel. The Pride of Baltimore is based on the early 19th century "Baltimore clippers" whose speed and versatility allowed for their success as privateers and blockade runners.

La Licorne:
This ship in bottle was inspired by Hergé's La Secret de la Licorne from Les Aventures de Tintin et Milou le fox terrier. It depicts the battle scene between Captain Haddock of La Licorne and Rackham la Rouge onboard his pirate ship.

Schooner Wyoming:

The six masted Schooner Wyoming was the largest wooden schooner that was ever built. She was launched by the Percy & Small shipyard in Bathe, Maine in 1909 and measured 450 feet overall.

HMS Victory:
SOLD on commission

The HMS Victory was launched in 1765 and is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line. She is displayed in a five liter bottle under full sail and crew onboard. Her name is hand painted under the detailed stern gallery. She is complete with her decorative figure head.

Deliverance and Patience:
SOLD on commission

The "Deliverance" and "Patience" were two pinnaces built in Bermuda in 1609 -1610 The two ships were built of local timber and the remains of "Sea Venture" which had wrecked upon the island. Following their construction, the ships went on to Jamestown finding the colonist in dire straits.

The two ships in bottles were ordered together to be displayed in two different hotel suites (named after the ships) in Bermuda.
